NNPC debunks fuel scarcity rumour, says more than 1bn litres in stock

Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has debunked rumours surrounding fuel scarcity in the country.

The rumour, which has caused some tension across the country was claimed as false by the corporation’s verified Twitter handle in a statement signed by Ndu Ughamadu, its Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division.

The corporation’s spokesperson said the rumour was intended to cause panic and problems in the country.

NNPC called the reports of fuel scarcity fake news while urging the public to discountenance the rumoured fuel scarcity.

“@NNPCgroup has once again appealed to Nigerians to disregard trending social media report of an impending fuel scarcity due to purported refusal by some oil marketers to lift products from deports,” the statement said.

According to the statement, it was revealed that the NNPC has over one billion litres of petrol in their stock and there was no need hoarding fuel, adding that fuel price still remains the same N145 per litre.

It also noted that there are 48 vessels of 50mln litres each have been committed for April 2019 before further stating there was no need for “panic buying or hoarding of petroleum products in anticipation of a phantom scarcity.”

Ughamadu explained that the tale was “fabricated by mischief makers with intent to create undue panic in the prevailing sanity in the fuel supply and distribution matrix across the country.”
